GH Dawe Community Centre

Project Summary

The expansion and renovation project of the GH Dawe Community Centre involved several improvements and additions. These included modernizing an existing ice surface to NHL standards, adding a second ice surface, expanding the north entrance to the building, establishing site access via 67th Street, improving site traffic flow, creating additional parking on the north side of the site, expanding fitness and programming space, and constructing an outdoor spray park and washroom facility on the northeast side of the property.

The new precast concrete arena project required extensive phased demolition work on an exterior wall to integrate the new arena structure. Prior to abatement and demolition, thorough exploratory work was conducted. A full-height, fully insulated, waterproof hoarding was installed to separate the construction area from the main reception, which remained operational throughout the project. Ensuring the proper sealing of the air and water vapour barrier was a critical focus during the envelope work, which included integrating the new and existing buildings. Interior finishes were also executed in both the new addition and the existing operational building.

Commencing in the spring of 2021, the project represented a significant endeavour for the Morskate Manufacturing team. Initially designed with a steel composite structure, a shift to a precast option was proposed to align with the City of Red Deer's budgetary requirements, resulting in substantial cost savings for the City.
